Residue – 프로젝트 개요
Residue는 실제 사회 시스템의 구조를 전시장 안에 재현하는 참여형 아카이브 프로젝트이다.
나는 껌 한 통을 하나의 벽돌로 본다. 벽돌이 쌓여 피라미드와 같은 거대한 고대 건축물이 만들어졌듯이 블록은 더 큰 구조를 이루는 최소 단위를 의미한다.
즉, Residue에서 새 껌 한 통은 시스템의 최소 단위를 상징한다. 이 기본 단위는 기업이 제공한다. 시스템의 설계는 작가가 하지만 그것이 현실에서 작동하기 위해서는 실제 물질이 필요하다. Residue는 실제 사회 시스템의 구조를 전시장 안에 재현하는 것을 목표로 하므로 기업의 참여는 단순한 전시의 후원이 아니라 시스템을 구성하는 필수 요소이다.
관람객은 전시장에 실제 편의점에 진열된 것과 동일하게 전시된 껌을 임의로 가져가 일상의 목적대로 소비한 후, 용도를 다한 물질을 자발적으로 전시를 위해 제출할 수 있다.
본래 용도를 다한 껌은 버려질 흔적에 불과하다. 그러나 Residue 시스템 안에서 그것은 새로운 관계의 시작이 된다. 작가는 제출된 각각의 껌을 전시 중에 수집, 분류, 기록, 관리하며 아카이브를 점차 구축해간다.
다시 말해, 새 껌은 시스템의 시작을 나타내고, 돌아온 껌은 관계의 시작을 나타낸다. 이 두 과정을 통해 Residue는 동시대 사회의 구조를 예술의 맥락 안에서 재구성한다.
Residue – Project Overview
Residue is a participatory archival project that reconstructs the structure of a real social system within the exhibition space.
I regard a single pack of chewing gum as a single brick. Just as bricks were assembled to construct monumental ancient structures such as pyramids, each block represents the smallest unit from which a larger system is built.
In Residue, a new pack of chewing gum symbolizes the fundamental unit of the system. This basic unit is provided by a corporate partner. While the artist designs the system, it requires real materials in order to function in reality. Because Residue seeks to reconstruct the structure of an actual social system within the exhibition, corporate participation is not simply sponsorship but an essential component of the system itself.
Visitors are invited to take a pack of chewing gum displayed exactly as it would appear in a convenience store, consume it in the course of everyday life, and voluntarily return the used material to the exhibition.
Once its original purpose has been fulfilled, the chewing gum would ordinarily become nothing more than discarded residue. Within the Residue system, however, it becomes the beginning of a new relationship. Throughout the exhibition, the artist collects, classifies, documents, and manages each returned piece of chewing gum, gradually building an evolving archive.
In other words, a new pack of chewing gum marks the beginning of the system, while a returned piece of chewing gum marks the beginning of a relationship. Through these two movements, Residue reconstructs the structure of contemporary society within the context of art.
